Kinja'd!!!

I’m moving to a different state in a little over a month and need something to get all of my stuff across the country. I’ll be driving my M2C out first on it’s own, then flying back for a second road trip with t he bulk of my stuff.

I’m leaning towards buying a ZR2 and renting a UHaul trailer. I’m wondering if it’s possible to buy a ZR2 in Illinois (my current state) on such late notice and pay my new state’s tax instead by waiting to register it and just drive out on temp plates. Thing is, I don’t have an address or license in my new state yet . I’m guessing it’s dumb and unfeasible to register it in Illinois since I have weeks (soon to be days) left.

I bought my first car out of state and then drove it on temp plates of the state I bought it in before going to a DMV in Illinois to register it and pay the Illinois tax .

Yes, the other option is to rent a UHaul truck, but considering I am planning on getting a ZR2 anyways I’m trying to kill two birds here (and save $1k over the difference between truck and trailer ) .

Rent a U-Haul truck, if they have one that fits everything. Then buy the ZR2  after you move to your new state.

No buy a Powerstroke and link it with King coilovers. Better than any ZR2.

Also temp plate should be no issue until you get a new address.

I’m guessing now is the time to get a great deal.

What engine in the ZR2 diesel or gas?

Gas. I know, it’s not the towing type.

Wouldn’t advise t owing during b reak in, unless you put some good miles on it first.  Get a U-haul and traile r and tow it back. Or buy in your new state. Sucks to burn the extra money though . TX has changed up the whole process for COVID, would assume the same with other states.

Last I looked deals weren’t amazing (did pretty good on my ‘19 in Nov), but there was a bit of GM money on the hood and 0/84 if you qualify.

Diesel is slow, good mpg . V6 has meh mpg and won’t hold 8th easily at 70-80 though, kinda annoying. Otherwise it’s fine.

A little more info is needed here. All of your possessions will fit in one pickup? What size are you going to have to rent in  a trailer?

I would imagine any dealer would let you choose to not register the car - pay for temp tags and that’s it. Alternatively, use a friend’s address or your office address in your new state and have the dealer register it there. Don’t forget to take sales tax into account.

Uhauls and Penske trucks suck, but don’t suck harder than driving your own car across the country. I would rather pay $1k to rent a truck than pay $300 and have to tow a trailer more than a few miles.

I feel like you're thinking to hard about this. Rent a U-Haul and a trailer and tow your car out with all your things in one trip then just buy in your new state.

Get the diesel, the 8-speed on the gas is Ford Powershift levels of garbage. There is already a class action.

Check pricing for one of those shipping container places that puts it on a train or the back of a truck out to your destination?

What state are you moving to? States like California will tax you if you bring in a new vehicle, like absolutely murder your bank account. Full regi stration and sales tax. IIRC the vehicle has to have over 7500 miles to avoid the new tax.

I wouldn’t register in Illinois, the next state you go to might be cheaper, or, even if not, might also end up double charged (mine charges 4.5% of the NADA value when you register, if you were moving here, they’re be no point paying IL registration and getting hit with that right after, though car registration fees can be tax deductible, depending ). You’ll probably be gone before all the paperwork is sorted out, anyway. I’ve bought two cars in Maryland and moved two more company-owned vehicles from there over the years, and they take about a month to process, with full nonessential staff in the office .

I wouldn’t say it’s Powershift bad... For the shudder, a fluid change (and torque converte r for some because the org fluid trashed the clutch ) fixes it. A coworker has an early build with the shudder (mild) and hasn’t done the fix. Mine is a factory updated fluid build and minus the high speed 8th gear holding i ssue has been faultless thus far.

The diesel is great for holding 6th at speed, mpg, high alt, and low constant speed wheelin’. It has it’s own issues with emissions . I wanted to love it - almost held out for one and to add a Banks tune (not out yet). The ZR2 V6 really n eeds 3.73s (can get 4.10 or 4.56s). T he truck really needs the 2.7T, so I’m l ooking forward to the 2024 for that.

We have a 2019, and not only will it not want to kick down, it also is constantly hunting and has the worst throttle response I’ve ever experienced. It’s like 80's turbo lag without the fun.

Well that’s awful.   Mine doesn’t hunt and kicks down fine, if not a bit too eagerly IMO. Almost sounds like an e- throttle or software issue? I know things can be better as I had a rental 2020 Ram 2500 6.4/8spd ZF and that combo so well  sorted between the e-throttle and trans programming you’d never know it was a first year combo...

The diesel is a dog, it really doesn't fit the character of the ZR2.

We have a 2018 Ram 1500 with the V6/8-speed, and it’s great. It’s amazing how different two 3.6 V6 engines and two 8-speed autos can feel.
